"Uhm- Neville?"
The sixth year Gryffindor in question looked up. He'd been lost in thought over his Herbology homework was surprised to find he wasn't alone at the entrance to the common room.
"Hermione? S-sorry- I didn't see you there..." He gave her an awkward smile until he noticed how worried she looked. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." She snapped immediately, subconsciously reaching up to smooth her hair. "Look, Neville. Could you please check the common room for- um."
Neville waited as her eyes darted through the portait hole and back to him, a little lost. "Check?" he repeated.
"For- um." she muttered. "Oh, never mind."
She pushed past him through the door and he followed her, nonplussed until he almost walked into her when she stopped. "Herm-"
Looking past her, he found Ron and Lavender, snogging passionately in front of the fire.
...
Oh.
He grabbed Hermione's hand as she made to walk back past him and out to the corridor. "Hang on a sec-"
"O-oi, Ron." Neville threw a piece of paper at the couple. The red head looked up. The room went silent, always ready to watch any kind of drama. "Get a room, will you?" He was trying hard to keep his voice friendly. Confrontation wasn't really his thing. "Some of us have to study, you know?" He grinned, forcefully.
Ron, just about ready to become rather angry, looked from Neville to Lavender to the rest of the room and back. "Jealous, mate?" he laughed. "Guess some people have all the luck, right?" Lavender preened at the praise, making the most of her ridiculously low cut top.
"Come on Won-won," she said smoothly. "Let's let everyone else get back to their work." She winked at her friends in the corner and giggled. There were better things than work in her near future, the giggle said.
Ron, his hand gripped in hers, was dragged out of the common room by the giggling girl, and slowly the common room settled down again.
Hermione appeared out of the corner she'd been hiding in and gave Neville a small smile and continued on to her room. Neville grinned to himself and stood a little taller.
